The Wanee Music Festival was Thursday April 19 – Saturday April 21. My
adventure began on Wednesday the 18th. I drove the 3 hours from Clearwater to
Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park. For those of you from the left coast,
Suwanee Music Park is kind of like Horning’s Hideout. It’s probably about
2 or 3 times bigger and has no hills. But it does have a lake and a natural
amphitheater as well as a big field for the main stage. Camping although
plentiful filled up quickly. By the time I got there late Wednesday afternoon
huge swaths of camping real estate was already roped off. Thanks to the wonders
of cell phone technology I was able to hook up with the Mountain and his clan of
freaks, many of whom I already knew. When I pulled into the camp I saw the
living room set up. No kidding these people brought couches and sectional
recliners, all the comforts of home.
Wednesday night there was a pre-party with some local Florida bands playing. By
the time I got my camp set up and had some dinner there were only 2 bands left
to play. The first was a band called Flannel Church. They weren’t fancy
or flashy, just good straight on rock n roll jams. I would see them again. The
headliner Wednesday night was Tampa homie's Cope. Cope is always
fun but that night they seemed to turn it up a notch. You could tell they were
really excited to be playing at Wanee. After the show it was a pretty mellow
night. Most of us went to bed early (1:00AM) to rest up for the approaching
madness.
Thursday was the first day of the festival. However only the Mushroom stage (the
amphitheater) was running, the Peach stage (main stage) would not be used until
Friday. I wandered over for the first band and noticed that people were putting
down chairs. Being from California and accustomed to left coast festivals where
people throw down blankets it seemed different that people would be doing
chairs. But when in Florida…. I walked the 10 minutes to my camp, grabbed my
chair and set it up on the “3rd row” off the floor for a nice line of sight,
good sound and some shade. Btw, when I say “row” what I mean is that the
amphitheater is terraced, kind of like Frost or the Greek.
After a fine set by the Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio (blues rock) came Ray
Manzarek and Roy Rogers Band. Yes, the keyboard play from the Doors
was playing with his new band. Sometimes bluesy, sometimes jazzy, sometimes
jammy it was very tasty. At one point Ray did a solo instrumental version of
"Crystal Ship" that he dedicated to Jim. The whole band closed the set with a
great version of "Riders on the Storm". Little did we know that was an omen of
things to come. Greg Allman’s son Devon was up next with his band
Honeytribe. He definitely had that Allman sound. During his set the first
big rain of the weekend hit; he was good enough that nobody left. Those of us
with rain gear put it on, many others just danced in the rain. The headliner for
the first night was Hot Tuna. What can I say about them; if you don’t
know Jorma you don’t know Jack. They were typical Hot Tuna which means it was a
great set.
Heading back to camp I discovered another difference between left coast
festivals and Florida festivals…. Moonshine. No kidding, people brought their
home made moonshine with them. Some were even selling it. And some of it was
really good. There was this one guy who had apple moonshine and I swear it
tasted like liquid apple pie. Imagine your mom’s home made apple pie but in
liquid form. It was so freakin’ good; yum.
Friday rolled around and both stages were up and going. Having learned my lesson
the day before I walked over to the main stage before the music started to throw
down a chair in front of the soundboard, dead center. I walked back over later
for my first band of the day, Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers. Bruce is
such a talented musician. His music spans multiple styles. For a few songs he
walked away from the piano and was playing the dulcimer. Playing early he was
only given an hour which he even lamented but he did set the bar high for
everybody else who followed. Next up was blues master Buddy Guy. Buddy
rocked it, a true guitar hero. I left in the middle of Buddy’s set to go check
out the Mickey Hart Band over on the other stage. Mickey’s got a great
band including a woman who does incredible vocals. I was grooving nicely to
Mickey but headed back to the main stage for Tedeschi Trucks Band. I love
Susan Tedeschi. There was a time in my life I was a groupie of hers. She and
Derek make such a soulful groovy sound it’s hard not to love them. The
headliners both nights were Further followed by the Allman Brothers.
I hadn’t seen Further in over 2 years. The band was tight with lots of
sweet jams. I was a couple sheets to the wind so to speak by this time so I did
not keep a set list but I remember "Alligator", "Brother Esau", "The Wheel",
"Brown Eyed Women" and "NFA" as highlights. They also did my all time favorite
Grateful Dead song: "Ripple". The Allmans started an hour late.
Apparently Greg was not well health-wise. In fact he was only on stage for about
½ the set. The Brothers carried on and played a great set that included "Blue
Sky" and "Elizabeth Reed". "Elizabeth Reed" was long and the highlight of the
set. Walked back to camp after the Brothers, had a snack and was ready for a
late night set by Particle.
Saturday morning I was all bushy eyed and bright tailed but still managed to
crawl over to the main stage to drop my chair off front and center. There was
already a band playing there but it was too loud and too early for me. Made it
back to camp for a couple bloody marys and then headed to see Jaimoe’s Jasssz
Band at the Mushroom stage. Jazz and more bloody marys were a better way to
ease in to the day. I really liked Jaimoe’s band, jazz for sure but with
some funk and some blues mixed in. After Jaimoe I headed back to the main
stage for Trigger Hippy. Trigger Hippy is Jackie Green,
Joan Osborne and friends. Jackie and Joan had great harmonies
and played so great rock n’ roll. I hope they come back to Florida so I can see
them again. Gov't Mule was up next, unfortunately so was the rain. It
rained so hard that Gov't Mule cut their set very short. The main stage
had very little protection from the elements. With 90 minutes before Further
(assuming the rain let up enough for them to play) it was time to walk back to
the other stage where Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaries were
playing. I’ve never seen James Brown live but I would imagine it was
similar to Charles Bradley. Very funky soul and oh man can he put on the
dance moves. By the end of his set the rain had let up and Further was
getting ready to go. This was probably my favorite set of the weekend. I managed
to write a set list down for it:
Playin->

Cryptical->
Other one->

E: US Blues
It wasn’t the real thing but it was close enough to pretend. Jerry was in
the house for sure. During "Bird Song" Phil sang for Jerry
“Something like a bird within HIM sang.” After that tremendous set the Allman
Brothers had their work cut out. Warren seemed to be on fire after
having his previous set cut short. Greg was out for much more of the set.
"Mountain Jam" was the overwhelming highlight of another tremendous set. To
close us out we got one last late night set with one of my favorite bands, The
North Mississippi Allstars. Chris wasn’t on bass and was missed.
Dr. Roosevelt of the Lee Boys came out and played some lap-steel
guitar. Around 2:00 in the morning, happy and tired I made it back to camp to
get a few hours of sleep before needing to make an early exit Sunday morning to
get back to Tampa for my afternoon flight for work. All in all this weekend was
some of the most fun I’ve had in a while. Although physically exhausting it left
me emotionally and spiritually charged and looking forward to next year’s Wanee.
