10,000 Lakes Festival
Soo Pass Ranch
Detroit Lakes, MN
By Richard Clarke
The Surroundings
My inaugural visit to the 10,000 Lakes
Festival coincided with my first visit to the Mid-West and both were positive
experiences. I do not consider myself a festival veteran, but being from the
East Coast and primarily attending events in my own region has led me to the
conclusion that the single biggest reason that sets10k apart from other
festivals is its geographical location. The people in Northern Minnesota are
some of the nicest that I have encountered in my travels. Everyone I met
associated with the festival, from the media coordinators to the security
personnel, were exceptional. From my vantage point, the event is one of the
best-organized festivals I have attended. Entering and exiting the venue could
not have been easier. Soo Pass Ranch is a sweet venue for a festival, with four
diverse stages; the grandiose Main Stage, the smaller field stage, the
amphitheater style Barn stage, and the intimate indoor Saloon stage. There are
more than a half a dozen campgrounds with wooded and cleared areas and attendees
can reserve which campground they would like. Lakefront campgrounds sell out
first, so reserve early for next year if waterfront camping is your thing. I
normally do not roll VIP, but 10K makes it well worth the extra coin with lots
of extra amenities, which include meals and drinks, a comfortable hospitality
tent, Main stage VIP section, separate quieter camping, and hot showers. The
Midwestern atmosphere had a real impact on the genuine good vibe of the
festival.
The Music
Wednesday
The line-up for this year’s event was diverse, with performances including
grassroots, bluegrass, jazz, progressive rock, jamtronica and other forms of
jam. After setting up camp on Wednesday, I had time to venture over to the Field
Stage for energetic sets by Bockman and The Breakfast. There were
plenty of other performances on the first night of music, but the long journey
to Minnesota had done me in and I went back to my tent completely satisfied and
full of anticipation of three more huge days of music.
Thursday
Any medium to large festival with multiple stages is going to require
festivalers to make choices, and with four stages, this was the case with 10K;
however, the festival organizers did an excellent job of matching up competing
stages with bands with different genres making it easier for those who favor one
form of jam over another easier choices. I made my decisions of conflicting
artists that I liked equally; based on how often I have been able to hear them
live or what the chances of hearing them live in the near future. With that
strategy in mind, I chose Garaj Mahal over Tea leaf Green as I had
just seen an excellent Tea Leaf set at All-Good the week before and they are
appearing at other events I am attending this summer and Garaj Mahal doesn’t
make it to the east coast much. I did sneak over for few songs by Tea Leaf, made
possible by the logistics of the venue. I did catch a little of the Trampled
By Turtles set the night before and although I thought they were excellent I
opted to camp out for Kimock/Perkins entire set, because I just can’t get
enough of Kimock’s excellent playing and I had never heard him play with Jane’s
Addiction drummer Steven Perkins. I was not disappointed as the set was
incredible. The Main Stage came to life for the first time of the festival with
O.A.R., which drew a raucously enthusiastic crowd. The first big
headliner of the festival was next-String Cheese Incident. I have always
seemed to miss out hearing this band live and could not have been happier with
their show. A nice touch to the 10K festival is that the headliners perform
full-length shows with two sets. After String Cheese, I opted for Mutaytor
over Railroad Earth, due only to the fact that I had never seen
Mutaytor, and as much as I love Railroad Earth I have listened to them perform
live several times and they were performing another set the next day. Mutaytor’s
set was definitely different and entertaining with fire, dancers, dancers with
fire, and pulsating beats.
Friday
I split time between Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Railroad Earth,
and it was difficult to peel away from either band but I absorbed as much as I
could from both sets. It is safe to say both sets were electric even though
Railroad Earth is an acoustic band. Another set I could not mange to depart from
to hear someone else was The Everyone Orchestra. This musical showcase of
improvisation features a revolving cast of great musicians and this performance
featured artists from Tea Leaf Green, Hot Buttered Rum, Railroad Earth and
guitarist Steve Kimock. Matt Butler conducts this impromptu collective of
musicians with great enthusiasm. I was thrilled to hear Keller Williams
and String Cheese Incident joining forces in the occasional collaboration
band Keller Williams Incident. That was a fun set to see and hear.
Phil Lesh and Friends headlined Friday night’s festivities. The endearing
Grateful Dead bassist still rocks and it is always a bonus that his friends are
great musicians. They churned out a great performance chock full of Grateful
Dead favorites. Umphrey’s McGee lit up the dark night with an explosive
set on The Field Stage. By Friday, my body had forgiven me for the grueling
drive to Minnesota and I caught an exciting late night set by Assembly of
Dust in the intimate indoor Saloon Stage.
Saturday
I started Saturday where I left off the night before catching Kinetics
high-energy jam frenzy at The Saloon Stage. After that, I bounced back and forth
between Hot Buttered Rum at The Field Stage and The Wood Brothers
at The Barn Stage. Hot Buttered Rum brought an exciting youthful vigor to
bluegrass. The Wood Brothers performance was culmination of Chris Wood’s awesome
bass playing and brother Oliver Wood’s guitar playing and beautiful vocals.
Another trip to The Saloon Stage yielded a fiery set by NYC jammers U-Melt.
Keller Williams attracted a huge crowd at the barn stage but I spent most
of time slot with Big Head Todd and the Monsters, another band that I
have never heard live and I totally dug their set. The Main Stage featured heavy
dose of the Benevento-Russo Duet as they performed a set as a duo before
Mike Gordon joined them on stage and with G.R.A.B., a new band,
which features the dynamic duo with Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio. I
have always liked The Duo’s exploratory music and I thought they sounded great
with the ex-Phish jam titans. Fireworks lit up the sky towards the end of the
G.R.A.B. set. Medeski, Martin, and Wood kept the fireworks flying with
their improvised jazz-fueled music. Trey Anastasio joined the trio for the final
leg of their set, much to the delight of the huge crowd that made their way to
The Field Stage from the Main Stage. The final set of the festival belonged to
Raq. The Saloon Stage quickly swelled to capacity, and the crowd spilled
into a huge throng outside the smallish club-style venue. Apparently, no one
wanted the music to end, but Raq made it a little less painful with a vibrant
set.
The 10,000 Lakes festival was my favorite festival experience so far and well
worth the 24-hour trip from my home. I will definitely be back next year even if
I move back to Florida and the 24-hour trip becomes 48. Bravo 10K.
